When a wayward fantasy hero gets out without raising an alarm, Claire seeks to retrieve it before it causes any damage (because being confronted or seduced by your unwritten works can be confusing – even harmful – for an author). From time to time, one materialises as a character and tries to escape. Hell’s Library is adjacent to the infernal realm, not subservient to it – and the Librarian of its Unwritten Wing is traditionally a human soul, because you can’t trust a demon with the dreams of humanity. Not every afterlife has a library (Heaven, for example. What if a librarian with a conscience, an archdemon with an agenda and a pair of short-tempered angels with a superiority complex all wanted to lay hands on the same book? Welcome to Hell’s Library. ![]() ![]() The collection is chronological in sequence, starting with the early days when affinity is a cutting edge technology and taking the reader through it's rapid development as it forms a fundamental part of civilisation. This process seems to affect most sci-fi novelists at some point in their careers and is probably a cathartic milestone in the transition from new SF author to bestselling author. ![]() Actually, as Hamilton himself admits, the original versions of these stories had nothing to do with Night's Dawn, but he has used the opportunity of this collection to tweak (or almost completely rewrite) all his earlier works and bring them in line. This is Hamilton's first collection of short stories (including one novella), set in the same universe as the bestselling Night's Dawn trilogy. ![]() ![]() ![]() But in the US, most students choose to learn Spanish, not French and unfortunately I did not always have Google with me while reading. So it's understandable the author might assume her readers know enough French to know these basic words and terms. Granted, the author was born and raised in England and I understand most English schools teach basic French. I just found it rather lazy coming from such a highly acclaimed author.Ī minor complaint but I also didn't like the fact that Plaidy frequently used french words and terms without always explaining what they meant. The same thing occured with other characters too. ![]() Words like "dainty" and "frivolous" were used far too often to describe Antoinette when there are plenty of suitable synonyms. ![]() The same adjectives seemed to be used over and over again. I suppose the lack of depth in the beginning was merely because Antoinette herself lacked much depth until her world began to change. The gradual evolution of Antoinette's character was well portrayed and the ending was very moving. But by the end of the book, I felt it was well worth the read. ![]() At first, I wasn't fond of the writing style - not because it wasn't modern but because it just didn't seem to lend itself to much depth. ![]() ![]() ![]() Every state is at risk from this hazard.Ī tsunami is a sea wave generated by an earthquake, landslide, volcanic eruption, or even by a large meteor hitting the ocean. But when she is called to a crime scene that bears eerie similarities to the Surgeon’s work, she cannot help but go, only to find that she is hunting yet another monster, one who may be in touch with the Surgeon himself. ![]() Rizzoli is still recovering from the capture of the Surgeon the previous year, during which she was attacked and injured by him. She does seem truly comfortable with Isles’s voice and I suspect this is the viewpoint she will continue to use.) (Incidentally, I find it interesting how Gerritsen has moved the main viewpoint from person to person throughout the series, from Moore to Rizzoli and finally to Dr Maura Isles, whose viewpoint she has used in The Sinner, Body Double, Vanish and The Mephisto Club. Instead of following Detective Thomas Moore, who is now married to Catherine Corday and holidaying in London, we now see things through the eyes of his former partner, Jane Rizzoli. ![]() The Apprentice begins the year after the events described in The Surgeon. Oh, they know the meaning of grace, but they certainly don’t extend it. Very often Christians look down their noses at those who are divorced…judging, condemning. As a Christian who has been divorced, I could relate to Haley’s pain. Nevertheless, she is unjustly judged by at least two characters (and probably several readers). ![]() ![]() Haley didn’t want this divorce and was committed to her marriage and her man. The thing I most appreciated about The Trophy Wives Club is that Billerbeck honestly shows what divorce looks like from the inside. I was transported to a lifestyle with which I’m much less familiar and it was fun. If you are looking for chic lit that isn’t like every other chic lit you’ve ever read, then this is the book for you. This weekend I took time to rest, refresh, and READ! My poor husband was planning a romantic time away and I kept pulling out The Trophy Wives Club. ![]() ![]() ![]() Lisa holds a BA in English from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio a joint master’s degree in Counseling Psychology and Pastoral Ministry from Boston College and an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University. ![]() She has contributed to the anthologies Verses Typhoon Yolanda: A Storm of Filipino Poets (Pawa Press, 2014) and Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Frontlines(PM Press, 2016).
